How is a heart attack diagnosed?

A doctor will immediately suspect a heart attack in anyone who has the symptoms mentioned above, and will arrange an ECG. There are specific changes on the ECG tracing that occur when heart muscle is being damaged. Where those changes occur depends on which bit of muscle is being damaged. If an MI is suspected, a blood test will be arranged looking for a rise in a chemical called troponin. When heart muscle is damaged it releases this chemical into the bloodstream; it will start to rise within 3 hours of a heart attack. It peaks between 24 and 48 hours and will then return to normal over the next 5 to 14 days.
